The Dolphins picked up their first win of the Tasman Premier League cricket competition at Horton Park on Saturday, downing the previously-unbeaten Nelson College side by five wickets.
After winning the toss Dolphins asked College to have a bat and quickly had the students in trouble at 3-22. However, some handy contributions from Harry Wilkinson, 56 from 90 balls, and Oran Sim, 53 from 89, saw them register a handy total of 200 before being dismissed in the 49th over.
Luke Holdaway with 4-38, Jaden Adams, 2-33, and Greg Knowles, 2-27, were the main wicket-takers.
Dolphins lost the early wicket of Aidan Conroy but soon began to put some decent partnerships together. They included a pivotal 54-run collaboration between Holdaway, who finished with 80 from 96 balls, and Josh Poole, who remained unbeaten with 53 from 57 when the match finished in the 40th over.
On the adjoining ground the news was not so good for the Falcons, who lost by 79 runs to Wakatu.
Bryan Krammer’s unbeaten 92 from 95 balls set up Wakatu’s demanding total of 243-5, with Daniel Baker’s 2-15 from five overs being the best of the home side’s bowling figures.
In reply, Falcons were dismissed for 164 in the 42nd over.
Matthew Stretch, 60 from 78, was the biggest contributor with the bat, while Sukh Aulakh, 20 from 23, and Sam Boyce, 21 from 52, added handy efforts.
Noah Hassan and Dallas Kelso claimed three wickets apiece to clip the Falcons’ wings.
