Blenheim volunteer rural brigade chief fire officer Steve Smith is taking his years of frontline firefighting experience to the national stage after being appointed vice president of the United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA).
The UFBA, a registered charity and incorporated society, represents more than 14,000 members and nearly 690 fire brigades across New Zealand and the Cook Islands. The organisation provides advocacy, welfare support and financial assistance for firefighters and volunteers.
Steve was appointed to the role last month and is set to become association president in time for the UFBA’s 150th anniversary. He is the first firefighter with a rural background to hold the position.
The role will see him travel throughout New Zealand, supporting brigades and helping connect them with the resources and services they need.
Steve says running a volunteer brigade can be challenging and "lonely" at times, with officers often balancing firefighting responsibilities alongside administration, human resources, advancing technology and their own careers.
He hopes his experience in rural firefighting, including involvement in major incidents such as the 2024 Port Hills wildfire, will bring additional support and a different perspective to the organisation.
“It’s a great thing because we’ve never had a voice like this before. It’s a great honour to be the first one.”
UFBA chief executive Bill Butzbach says the inclusion of rural leaders provides valuable insight into risks across both the built and natural environments, strengthening support for members nationwide.
"I'm very much looking forward to Steve's contribution," he says.
